REALISTIC RUNNING CHANNEL | Week 6 of Atlantic City Marathon with @BenParkes
#runningvlog #runningchannel
Another week of training for the Atlantic City Marathon in the bag. Week 6 was good to me, and my 16 mile long run with marathon pace miles in it was pretty on track. Work is certainly paying off and am starting to feel stronger. Nailing down fueling has always been an issue for me, but I think UCan will work.

    I agree, at least 1 UCan per hour. On my long run, I try to get 60 grams of carbs per hour. 1/3 from a UCan, 1/3 from Skratch carb drink (25g per flask and 1 flask per hour), and 1/3 from a food source like a chew, bar, etc. For me, the skratch chews taste the best and after that, the cliff blocks. But I understand some people don’t like the texture. Your runs are looking great Susie! 😀👍🏼❤️🌈🏃🏻‍♀️

      I have never used Skratch and a lot of people are recommending it lately. I guess ita my turn to give it a try!! I don't know that i will be able to consume 60 grams an hour moving forward... The times when I've had 60 grams of carbs I haven't done well in races. And by not done well I mean I ran slower. I have run faster taking 40 grams an hour, and i ran my fastest marathon ever with 100grams of carbs during the whole Marathon ( i took 3 gels and a banana). Why? I don't know. It seems counterintuitive to what everyone is saying. But that is my experience. 🙂

    Trying incorporating co2 tolerance training. Co2 tolerance training I like to do is lie down and follow a video, where you breath through your diaphragm and then hold your breath 50% of your max breath hold then you diaphragm breath again but the time is shorter and then hold again for the same time and you keep doing it until all breath holds are done then it has a max breath hold at the end. Just such co2 tolerance training 30 seconds breath holds it’s with a woman. Really helpful video I can hold my breath for 1 min 45 seconds now and really made me more relaxed when running so heart rate much lower

    I would urge you to not focus too much on VO2Max from the watch (good too look at data but it is not always trustworthy). The other stuff you talk about like not being able to complete long runs, yes, those are good indicators, but the watch is fallible. Mine fluctuates 4 points fairly often (it's even fluctuated like 6+ points going down to like 54 and as high as 62. I'm sitting at 59 now but I ran my fastest marathon when it was like 57 🤷‍♀ - the things I pay attention to are resting heart rate and HRV. But resting heart rate shows if you are not recovering - it is stays higher). I was thinking about you yesterday on my run - and while I'm not a coach, I have been through a lot of different plans and had coaches before (had one I paid for back in 2017 - ultimately I improved more without one), I think that if you want to get faster, it is the weekly aerobic volume you are putting in. It's great that you are doing those treadmill hikes - any additional amount of time you can put into the week where you get your HR up will help. I do wonder if this plan is just too low on mileage. I did not see marked improvement in my performances until I routinely hit 40+ miles per week (that is when I finally did BQ, I peaked at 50-something miles). Some people don't need that but they are often genetically gifted runners. Speed work like strides is definitely important as we age (very important), too.

    • @IRunThings
      @IRunThings 8 днів тому

      I agree with all these assessments. :) Yes I think it was too low on miles, but I already upped the mileage last week and plan on running more miles than what the plan calls for. basically I am keeping the long run with the miles at MP, and then upping every run. And getting rid of the threshold. I hate thresholds and I've always done better in races without them. I think they are the kind of run that I dont recover from fast enough. I didn't do it last week (did intervals instead) and my long run was tough, but I did it.

    • @littlerunner4505
      @littlerunner4505 8 днів тому

      @@IRunThings Yeah, thresholds can work but you can get away without them just doing more Z1/Z2 volume and some high end speed work. I wouldn't worry about adding tempo/threshold until you get up to at least 40 miles per week. Then it might make sense (but TBH, I would probably put more effort into getting to 50 mpw before I would worry about adding tempo).

      Yeah. I ran with Ucan this weekend and my 16 mile long run with 6 at marathon pace went reasonably well. I think I could have used a 3rd gel but I didn't bonk at all. It's just interesting it's changed over time

    I’m also in NJ and post-menopausal, and if it weren’t for run/walk, I would not be able to run at all in the summer because I overheat so easily which can leave me feeling awful for the rest of the day. This summer has been terrible. I’m looking forward to cooler weather. You should make a video of running the seven mile beach around Avalon and Stone Harbor. It’s so pretty and the sand is packed. Perfect for running at low tide when it hits early in the morning around sunrise.

      If you go to nyrr.org you will find all of their races listed. There's a lottery so pay attention to when it opens. It tends to be around early November. Usually right after NYC Marathon. But that could change. Follow nyrr on Instagram, they will post there too.

    I used ucan and mixed with others too a little here and there. Just have to have in mind is to have them 30 minutes before you need them. That is what they recommend.

      I am very excited to try Ucan. I hope it goes well. And yeah I was planning on alternating. That's what training should be for, so things are squared away hopefully for race day. Thanks for watching and posting 😀

    I just received my order of UCan gels and will be trying them this weekend on my long run. As a diabetic, gels, bars, and nutrition can be challenging due to the high sugar content. I like skratch carb energy powder and Nuun electrolytes. Both are lower in sugar. For food, I like fruit, potatoes, sweet potatoes, rice balls, pretzels, rice Krispy treats (lower in sugar than some bars), and flour tortillas filled with peanut butter or whatever. I like the honey stinger products because everything is based on honey and the clif energy blocks/chews. Love seeing your running journey Susie. Good luck on the upcoming race.

      You'll have to let me know how Ucan gels work out for you! I am excited to try them. I was thinking about the rice Krispy treats. Those may be a good choice. I have tried fruit. It's just a bit bulkier and heavier unless it's a banana. Thanks for watching my videos!!! I appreciate the support!

    I turned 45. First time with a belly, period was once like clockwork, now skipping, cant even go a decent 10 mlie run without struggling and having to stop. And i have a marathon in October. Im considering not going. This menopause or perimenopause is terrible

    • @IRunThings
      @IRunThings 14 днів тому

      I would encourage to Google Stacy Sims. She has been interviewed on many podcasts and is a wealth of knowledge in this field. She is an exercise physiologist. What has helped me keep belly fat at bay is SIT training. It works wonders. She was recently at the Huberman podcast. In terms of what you are going through, I can say in my personal experience once you are on the other side you feel pretty amazing. Once the hormones are not a roller coaster and you are not cramping randomly and have the mood swings. I remember a race in which I was running amazing and keeping a great pace and started cramping at mile 10 and the cramps were so incapacitating I had to start walking... it was so defeating. Then I went to the bathrooms and there I was, one week early and in the worst mood of my life. In Spain we say that the difference in between a terrorist and a woman on her period is that with you can negotiate with a terrorist. 🙂 Obviously an exaggeration, but I am sure you know what I am talking about.

    • @IRunThings
      @IRunThings 14 днів тому

      I also would encourage to run your marathon. Just cut yourself some slack. It might be amazing, and it might be also super slow. Still, you will be a marathoner. And that's pretty sweet
